The Venetian mask par excellence is the Bauta, (to be pronounced with the accent on the ù) which spread in Venice in the period between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is one of the symbols of the Venetian eighteenth century, but its origins are lost much earlier in time : its first attestation dates back to the 13th century, and remained in use until the fall of the Republic of Venice. There are probably three interpretations of the origin of the name “Bauta”, one which derives from the German verb Behüten custodiare, “to protect”, a second instead from Bàu, the verse to scare children, and the third instead from Bava intended as a ‘gag’. the shape of the mask is called face, or “larva” or theatrical mask (from Latin) its rostrum shape in the lower part allows you to eat and drink without having to remove it, another advantage is that the voice of the person wearing the bauta is heard modified thanks to the particular shape, to become someone else there is nothing better than wearing a beautiful Bauta. Therefore, even in the world of Venetian jewels, this mask is given wide prominence.
