Tradition has it that in 946, during a wedding ceremony, a group of Turkish pirates kidnapped several Venetian maidens. The Doge’s response was immediate and determined: his galleys pursued the pirates to the coast of Caorle, where they were defeated and the young women were finally freed. From this victory, one of the most beloved Carnival celebrations was born: the Festa delle Marie, a symbol of rebirth, protection, and Venetian pride. It is precisely from this story that our Moretto comes to life, always an emblem of victory over pirates and the strength of the Serenissima.
