The Moretto you see on this page, which you can obviously see and try in our shop in Venice, is made of pure 24 kt gold. Usually, goldsmiths use 18 kt gold alloys, the right combination of malleability and hardness that makes it possible to create wonderful creations, but… for this type of jewel we have chosen 24 kt gold; the same gold used in ancient times in the mint of the Serenissima to mint coins such as Zecchini and Oselle, or even today in India for fine jewellery. In spite of the greater difficulties in working the “magic” colour of 24 kt gold will never be the same as that of 18 kt gold. If you compare this moor with other lesser gems, the difference is obvious. The engravings on the front and back are brighter and time leaves them totally unaffected by oxidation. All the stones used are of high quality; the heads as for all the other Venetian blackamoors are in ebony wood.
